Maui wildfire report release announced for April 17, 2024

The Department of the Attorney General has confirmed that the Phase One report of the independent investigation into the Maui wildfires will be available on April 17, 2024.

The announcement was made by Attorney General Anne Lopez, emphasizing the report’s focus on the initial 24 to 72 hours of the wildfire incident and its aftermath.

The investigation, supported by the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), aims to provide a science-based analysis of the events and recommend future safety measures.

Delays in data collection lead to report rescheduling

The FSRI team, recognized globally for its expertise in fire safety science, faced unexpected challenges in collecting the necessary data, leading to a delay in the report’s release.

This postponement follows the Department’s issuance of subpoenas to various Maui County agencies to secure relevant documents and interviews, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the investigation.

Legal challenges and community cooperation

In response to the investigation’s demands, the County of Maui required subpoenas for all further information, resulting in a significant increase in subpoenas issued by the Department.

Despite these legal complexities, Steve Kerber, PhD, PE, Vice President and Executive Director of FSRI, acknowledged the community’s support in sharing experiences and information, crucial for the investigation’s thoroughness.

Anticipation for the report and its impact on Hawaii’s safety

Attorney General Lopez stressed the importance of a meticulous investigation to ensure accuracy and comprehensiveness.

She expressed confidence that the Phase One report would begin to answer the community’s questions about the tragic wildfire.
