Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued a set of safety tips for the upcoming Diwali celebrations.

Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is traditionally a time for using divas or oil lamps and fireworks, which increases the risk of fire-related incidents.

By following the service’s advice, families celebrating on 12 November can minimise the dangers and enjoy the festivities safely.

Diwali fire safety: securing candles and divas

A primary focus for the Fire & Rescue Service is the proper handling of candles and divas, essential to the Diwali celebration.

They urge the public to ensure all candles and oil lamps are placed in secure holders and that tea lights are on a heat-resistant surface.

The service cautions against keeping flammable materials such as soft furnishings close to the flames and recommends special care with home-decorated candles and oil lamps to prevent accidental fires.

Avoiding fire risks during Diwali

The prevention of electrical fires is also highlighted, with a stern warning against the dangerous practice of ‘daisy-chaining’ extension leads.

The Fire & Rescue Service also stresses the importance of adhering to British safety standards when using fireworks and provides guidelines on safe storage and handling.

In addition to firework safety, the service advises never leaving cooking unattended, as kitchens are a common fire start point.

Responding to fires and smoke alarm advice

The Fire & Rescue Service reminds the public that in the event of a fire, the priority should be to evacuate immediately, avoid re-entering the building, and dial 999 for assistance.

Additionally, Diwali is recommended as an opportune moment for households to install smoke alarms if they haven’t already. Prevention Delivery Manager Vikki Thomas emphasised the significance of following these safety measures, stating: “We want everyone to have an enjoyable Diwali and stay safe at the same time.

“Sadly, we have had fires in the past caused by Diwali candles and daisy-chained extension cables that have caused real devastation.

“By following our advice, you can keep your family and home as safe as possible from the risks posed by fire.”
