The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has launched an urgent appeal to the public to assist in identifying and reaching the most isolated and vulnerable individuals in Scotland who are at risk of house fires.

This appeal forms part of their proactive ‘Make the Call’ campaign.

Make the Call campaign aims to prevent house fires

The campaign specifically targets families, friends, and carers, urging them to arrange a free Home Fire Safety Visit (HFSV) for those who may be at risk.

In the past year alone, 42 individuals in Scotland have lost their lives due to fires, with the majority being over 50 years old.

This statistic underscores the critical nature of the SFRS’s initiative.

Characteristics of those most vulnerable to fire

SFRS has identified that individuals over 50, particularly those who smoke, live alone, have mobility issues, or use medical oxygen, are at a heightened risk of fire-related injuries or fatalities.

Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Iain Macleod, overseeing Prevention and Protection at the Service, emphasised the preventability of many fire incidents, lamenting the lack of prior knowledge about the living situations and vulnerabilities of the victims.

The process and importance of Home Fire Safety Visits

The process of arranging a Home Fire Safety Visit is straightforward and can be initiated by a simple phone call, text, or online form submission.

During these visits, trained SFRS staff from local stations assess fire risks in homes, offer tailored solutions and assistance, and can install smoke detectors where necessary.

Community Safety Minister Siobhian Brown also echoed the campaign’s importance, urging the public to consider anyone they believe might be at risk.

For a direct family member or carer, referring someone for a HFSV is straightforward.

However, neighbours or friends must obtain consent before making a referral.

The ‘Make the Call’ campaign by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service highlights a crucial aspect of fire safety: community involvement.

While firefighters play a pivotal role in responding to emergencies, preventing fires before they occur is equally vital.

This campaign serves as a reminder that fire safety is a collective responsibility.

It underscores the importance of being vigilant about the safety of those around us, especially the vulnerable.

The simple act of referring someone for a Home Fire Safety Visit can have far-reaching effects, potentially saving lives and preventing the devastating impact of fires.

This initiative not only enhances individual safety but also strengthens community bonds, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for the well-being of all members.

In a broader sense, the campaign contributes to building safer communities, where residents are empowered to take proactive measures in fire prevention and safety.
